
Yétúndé S. Alábẹdé
Yétúndé is a multilingual language teacher and a scholar. She is a passionate educator, language curriculum developer, and emerging teacher trainer. She is interested in how parents enhance home-school connections through the indigenous language acquisition of their kids.
Having Yorùbá as her mother tongue, the pride she takes in language learning and teaching, she took undergraduate Yorùbá courses to enhance her Yorùbá language prowess. In a bid to expand her plurilingualism tenets, she enrolled at the Confucius Institute to learn the Chinese language and culture. She also had three Chinese Proficiency Certificates to her credit.
While as a language teacher in Nigeria, she started her second degree and applied to the Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant Program, an exchange program between the Nigerian government and the US Department of States. Yétúndé was in the US as a Fulbright scholar to teach Yorùbá language and culture to American students, and this made her appreciate Yorùbá language more.
Presently, she is working on a project that explores Family Language Policy (FLP) and how that affects children’s translanguaging both at home and in school. Indeed, Yetunde believes that parents have a significant role in the language acquisition of their kids, and training children to be bi/multilingual is paramount to her, especially in the new global village so that children can be global citizens.
